Crohn’s disease affects approximately 780,000 Americans. Although Crohn's disease is more prevalent among teens and young adults, everyone is at risk.
What is Crohn's Disease?
Crohn's Disease was named after Dr. Burrill B. Crohn in 1932. Crohn’s disease belongs to a group called inflammatory bowel disease or IBD. Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the GI tract. The most common areas affected by Crohn's disease are the colon and last part of the small intestine.
Although Crohn’s was thought to be an autoimmune disease (immune system attacking the body), research suggests otherwise. The pain and inflammation caused by Crohn’s disease is now thought to be the immune system attacking both good and bad bacteria in the GI tract.
