An All Natural Treatment for Your Dog’s Hot Spots

Is there anything more heartbreaking than a dog that’s sick or in pain? In particular, hot spots can be devastating to watch. They are often extremely sensitive and painful, and your pet’s own instincts — to lick, chew and scratch the area — only make things worse.
Worse yet, many common treatments for hot spots include harsh chemicals, invasive antibiotics, and painkillers with lots of potential side effects. Talk to your vet and use those treatments if absolutely necessary, but you may be able to treat hot spots with a much more gentle, organic solution: noni!

What Are Hot Spots?

First, some information about what exactly your pet is going through. Hot spots, also known as moist dermatitis or superficial canine pyoderma, are inflamed, infected sores on the skin, often resulting from bacterial infection on the skin. Hot spots can also be caused by allergic reactions, poor grooming, and bites from insects or arachnids.
Anything that irritates your dog’s skin and causes him or her to start licking, chewing, and scratching the area can turn into a hot spot. In particular, the combination of an open wound, moisture, and continued irritation is a recipe for painful hot spots. They’re most likely to form on the dog’s head, chest, or hips, but can form elsewhere as well.
Hot spots usually redden, accompanied by wet scabbing, oozing, and increased inflammation and itching. There may even be an odor resulting from the infection. The area will most likely become sensitive to the touch, so be very gentle with your furry friend when treating the spots.
Treatment involves soothing the spots and protecting them from further damage. Most importantly, however, you and your vet will need to determine the root cause of the hot spots so they don’t just come right back.
You can learn more about hot spots by clicking here, but remember that you may be able to avoid some of the harsh treatments listed there!

Noni: Treating Hot Spots on Two Fronts

Many of the topical treatments for hot spots are full of potentially harmful chemicals, including excessive antibiotics, steroids, and painkillers. These treatments may have side effects which could harm your pet, especially if your pet manages to lick some!
Luckily, nature has provided us with an unusual fruit that works both from the outside in and the inside out to heal skin conditions like this. It works for humans, and it works for your furry friends, too! Raw noni fruit is powerful, and has stood the test of time as a natural remedy for thousands of years.
But how does it work?

From the Outside: Soothes and Heals

Raw pulp from the noni fruit includes 165+ beneficial compounds, including a powerful painkilling, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial compound called scopoletin. One study said that noni’s painkilling power was comparable to hydrocortisone, but without any side effects or toxic level.
Other compounds in noni help resist parasites and treat infection. Click here to learn about the top 4 most beneficial compounds in noni fruit.
To treat hot spots topically, we recommend our Pets Lavender Noni Lotion. This gentle formula is made of pure, organic, raw noni pulp, mixed with water, grapefruit seed extract, and organic lavender oil. It’s the same formula as we sell for humans, but in a bottle with cute animals and an easy animal-friendly applicator tip.
You can apply this topical treatment multiple times per day. The best part is, even if your pet does lick off some of this lotion, it’s actually beneficial! Of course, you’ll want to prevent your dog from licking the hot spots as much as possible, whether with a plastic cone collar, bandage, or t-shirt.

From the Inside: Repairs and Prevents

Unless you also treat the underlying cause of the hot spots, whether it’s parasites, underlying infection, stress, or an allergic reaction, you’ll have a hard time completely healing them and preventing a resurgence.
That’s why we recommend also giving your pet a daily dose of Pets Noni Fruit Leather! This raw food has a wide variety of benefits for pets, including many that may help eliminate and prevent hot spots.
  • Boosts Immunity: Good for regulating allergic reactions and infection
  • Kills/Repels Parasites: Worst enemy of insects, arachnids, & worms — learn more!
  • Prevents Infection: Strong antimicrobial properties
  • Relieves Inflammation: Reduces pain and allows infection to heal
  • Improves Mood: Lowers stress levels and helps with anxious habits
For larger dogs, we recommend about two 2x2 inch pieces per day while the hot spots are healing, spread out throughout the course of the day. For smaller dogs, start with one piece per day and move up to two if symptoms do not improve.
Once you get those hot spots under control, continue giving a 2x2 inch piece per day for preventative care and to continue reaping the many benefits of this powerful healing fruit!

Noni: Organic Flea and Tick Preventative

Got an itchy dog?
Flea bites and tick infestations can be annoying to your pets and cause allergic reactions. There are lots of ways to prevent these pests, but many of them involve harsh chemicals that you might not want to bring into your household. Or you might be looking for something to supplement the treatments you’re already using.
Either way, there’s an organic flea and tick preventative, in the form of a raw food that’s grown, harvested, and processed on our organic family farm on Kauai.
Noni fruit has beneficial properties for pets as well as humans. One of these benefits is naturally deterring fleas and ticks.

Fleas

Fleas are the classic dog pest, and for good reason—they’re a plague on our furry friends! It can be very difficult to keep your dog away from fleas if they spend any amount of time outside.
Fleas can survive temperatures as low as 65 degrees, making them a year-round concern for many pet owners. They inhabit many parts of the world, and live in many different environments.
Preventing fleas is part of being a pet owner. Pets can bring fleas inside, and may carry diseases transmissible to humans. It’s very important to find a solution that works for you and your pet.

Symptoms

Fleas lay eggs on the skin of your pet, which turn into larva that infect your pet’s bedding and your home. When the larvae are ready, they hop onto the nearest available host and start the cycle again—often on the same pet that fed their mother.
Pets can tell that there are fleas on their skin, and they usually scratch, chew, and bite the affected areas. It’s very possible for the skin to get infected and irritated, or for an allergic reaction to develop.

Problems with Existing Treatments

The chemicals used to kill fleas are obviously rather harsh pesticides. It’s well below a lethal dose for your pet, but with low-dose exposure overtime, the results are not well-studied. Initial reports indicate that many pets are sickened or even die each year as a result of exposure to flea-killing chemicals.

Natural Ways to Prevent or Kill Fleas

  • Sprinklediatomaceous earth or borax on carpet that may be infected
  • Essential oils, including lavender, citronella, pennyroyal, and eucalyptus
  • Comb pet with soapy water
  • Vacuum frequently anywhere that your pet spends a lot of time
  • Use noni topically and give your pets noni fruit leather to prevent fleas

Ticks

If your dog spends a lot of time outside in a tick-prone area, a daily tick check should be part of your routine.
Ticks bite your pets and suck blood from them, sometimes injecting an anesthetic so your pet doesn’t notice it. They usually have barbs or glue-like saliva to keep them in place while they feed. The tick then drops off to prepare for its next life cycle change.

The trouble with ticks is, they spread infectious disease when they travel from host to host. They spread a variety of diseases, including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The best way to avoid these infections is to avoid ticks if at all possible, or to try to catch them as quickly as possible.

Problems with Existing Treatments

There are treatments that can help prevent ticks, but they contain potentially harmful chemicalsthat can impact your pet’s digestive tract, internal organs, and overall health in the short and long term. As with flea treatments, it’s important to find a nontoxic solution that works for you and your pet.

Organic Tick Prevention

A good way to prevent your own exposure to ticks is to wear long pants when you take your dog out walking in areas where there might be ticks, but that doesn’t help your dog! Preventing dog ticks is pretty difficult, other than by avoiding tick-infested areas. But that’s not always easy.

Organic Ways to Prevent Ticks

  • Check for ticks often if you live in a high-risk area
  • Try lemon eucalyptus essential oil
  • Give pets noni fruit leather to prevent ticks

Noni as a Non-Toxic Preventative

Noni Fruit Leather can act as anorganic flea and tick preventative if you feed it to your dog regularly over a period of time. It’s 100% certified organic, with no preservatives or added chemicals. It’s just raw, low- heat dehydrated noni pulp, full of beneficial enzymes.By taking Noni Fruit Leatherinternally it gets in your pets system and fleas and ticks leave.

Noni Benefits

  • Immune builder: Enzymes in noni help the body fight diseases and parasitic infestation
  • Skin regeneration: Raw noni has been used for years to help heal the skin
  • Reduces inflammation: restores balance to the body’s systems and soothes pain

Bhakti Example

Bhakti is our much-loved farm dog, who runs up to us every day when it’s time to take his noni. He clearly knows it’s good for him. He’s 11 years old, but still behaves like a puppy.

Fed noni all his life, Bhakti has never had a tick or a flea, or heartworm. He’s never had shots or pills to prevent them, it is the noni that keeps him healthy and the fleas and ticks at bay.

Alleviate These 3 Painful Horse Ailments with Noni

Horses are amazingly delicate in some ways, for being such strong, powerful animals. They’re prone to a number of painful, irritating skin conditions that can greatly detract from their quality of life.
Nothing is worse than seeing your beloved horse suffering, and it’s so important to find a treatment that works—preferably one that is safe and natural, without side effects. But natural pet medications that  get great results can be hard to come by.

We’re constantly learning new ways that noni can be used to promote the health of humans and animals, including horses. We’ve heard stories from our users for years, telling us how noni has helped their equine friends to overcome common skin ailments like sweet itch, rain rot, and mud fever. And veterinarians are confirming these results.
Here’s some more information about these three horse skin ailments, and how you can use noni to bring your horse much-needed relief, totally naturally.

Sweet Itch (Pruritis)

This condition is a hypersensitive reaction to the bites of certain flies, gnats, and other insects. It’s characterized by mild to severe itches along mane, back, and tail, but sometimes it also appears along the legs and belly. The skin continues to itch long after the insect bite, due to an extreme histamine response.
The itching is so severe that the skin may be damaged, with areas of sore, open, bleeding skin. Hair loss is also common, with bald patches turning grey and becoming permanently bald.
The excessive itching makes the condition last longer, as the skin continues to get irritated. It can be a very difficult condition to treat. Avoiding areas with the irritating insects can help, but just a few bites is enough to cause an outbreak of itching.

Rain Rot (Streptothricosis)

This is one of most common skin conditions in horses, caused by bacteria that enters cut or scraped skin. In order for the bacteria to spread rapidly and cause a problem, there has to be extreme moisture present, as the name suggests. Horses with thick coats that hold water or who live in damp stalls are at highest risk.

Initially, the area will be sensitive to the touch, with small lumps on the horse’s skin or hair. Soon you will see tufted mats of hair and/or crust-like scabs, which are painful and may bleed.
The scabs usually last 1-4 weeks if untreated, but you should treat it to reduce the risk of secondary infection which may be much worse. The scabs should be removed so they can dry out and heal, but this can be extremely painful.

How Noni Can Help

Taking noni orally can help boost the immune system to help your horse fight off the infection and prevent secondary infection.
If possible, apply Noni Pet Lotion before scabbing begins. Once the scabs form applying Noni Pet Lotion will soften the sores and help you remove them with less pain. It will also help the skin heal more quickly and prevent further infection.
Then apply the Noni Bio Bandage to the areas under the scabs, to protect new skin as it forms and to continue the healing process.

Mud Fever (Pastern Dermatitis), a.k.a. Greasy Heels or Cracked Heels

Mud fever is another painful bacterial skin infection caused by lingering dampness too close to the skin, which provides an environment for the bacteria to thrive. The bacteria may come from mud, hence the name, but they are found in dry areas as well, and can stay dormant in the skin for a long time until the wet conditions occur that allow them to grow.
This condition usually affects the lower legs and heels of the horse, especially if they were standing in a wet, muddy field. But it can occur elsewhere, such as under rugs and tack if sweating occurs to moisten the bacteria.
The symptoms are matted hair, crusty scabs, and sores on the lower legs of the horse. The heels may also feel greasy. Overall, the condition makes it painful for the horse to walk, and the horse may be lethargic, depressed, and lose its appetite.

How Noni Can Help

Veterinarians highly recommend noni lotion for this condition.Keep the area clean and dry, and the horse from the wet. Apply the Noni Pet Lotion and/or the Noni Bio Bandage. Repeat until healed.
Noni taken internally also helps strengthen the immune system and reduce inflammation, for a speedier recovery.
All three of these skin conditions are greatly helped by noni. If your horse is prone to any of these conditions, try noni for all-natural, fast relief, so your horse can get back to being his or herself.

Animals Know What’s Good For Them: Why Pets Love Noni Fruit Leather

Animals are a lot more intuitive than we sometimes give them credit for. They have a way of knowing when something is wrong, they have good instincts, and they know how to get what they need to be healthy. So it’s no surprise to us that animals love Noni Fruit Leather.
Noni is a powerful supplement to a healthy diet for humans and pets alike, and can help prevent and treat a wide variety of ailments and extend a long, healthy life.

What is Noni Fruit Leather for Pets?

Hawaiian Organic Noni Fruit Leather is made of 100% fresh noni pulp. We dry the pulp at a low temperature to create a raw food product that is non-fermented, potent, and full of beneficial nutrients, enzymes, and compounds that heal the body.
The whole product is grown, dried, and packaged on our organic family farm on Kauai, so we maintain control of every part of the process.
We use the exact same formula to make our Noni Fruit Leather for people and for pets. We understand that pets are a part of your family, so we never skimp on quality in products for your furry friends. The only difference is, we put pictures of cute animals on the packaging for pets, so you know whose noni is whose!

What Kinds of Pets Can Take Noni?

Most animals can benefit from a daily noni supplement, but here are the ones that are most common:
  • Dogs and cats
  • Horses
  • Goats and other livestock
  • Birds
Most animals should take a 2x2 inch square of Noni Fruit Leather each day as a preventative measure, with an additional 1-2 pieces taken each day for more severe conditions.
Small animals under 20 pounds should be given a 1x1 inch square 1-3 times per day.
You can either give them the piece of fruit leather whole, soak it water to soften it, or chop it up finely and mix with food.

Animals Who Love Noni

I’m always amazed at how well animals can sense what’s good for them. They have much more complex, instinctual inner lives than we realize. The fact that animals love noni fruit is a great example of this. Many humans think the fruit tastes and smells unusual, or even bad, but pets aren’t fooled. They know a good thing when they try it.
Here are two of my favorite stories of animals who just love noni fruit.

Bhakti the Farm Dog

Our farm’s 11-year-old Australian Shepher and Airedale mix has been taking noni since he was young, and it’s as if he hasn’t aged a day. He’s an 11-year-old puppy who bounds up to us every day to get his daily noni. And he loves it. See for yourself in this video!
He gets so excited when it’s time for noni, because he knows it’s working to protect and heal his body from the inside out! Bhakti has never had a tick or a flea, or heartworm, and he’s never had shots to prevent them! It’s all the noni.

Local Wild Chickens

We love having a flock of local wild chickens on our farm, and they love all the delicious noni they get to eat each day! We don’t feed them Noni Fruit Leather, but they do eat lots of fresh noni fruit.

We have visitors to our farm throw noni to the chickens, who love to gobble it up. They must know it’s good for them, and they’re some of the healthiest chickens I’ve ever seen.
But recently, one of the chickens started feeling a little entitled! I was opening up a fresh noni fruit to show to our farm tour guests, and one of the chickens jumped up to stand on my chest so he could get to the noni! I’ve never seen a chicken that excited about anything.

Why Give Noni Fruit Leather to Pets?

There are lots of benefits to giving your pet a daily noni supplement. We know that Bhakti and all the other animals who love noni get so excited because they can tell it’s good for them.

Preventative Health

Noni Fruit Leather is an amazing preventative for humans and pets alike. Here are just a few of the conditions a regular dose of noni can prevent in your beloved pets:
  • Hot spots
  • Fleas and ticks
  • Cysts and tumors
  • Heart conditions
  • Diabetes
We’ve seen time and time again that pets who take noni before they need it live longer, healthier lives. Bhakti, our farm dog, has taken noni since he was young, and now he still behaves like an 11-year-old puppy—full of energy, healthy, and always excited to take his noni each day!

Treating Ailments

Noni is also amazing for helping pets to heal from existing ailments of all kinds. Noni Fruit Leatherhelps reverse everything in the list above, as well as preventing and treating:
  • Stomach troubles, ulcers and poor digestion
  • Arthritis, inflammation, and joint pain
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Infections
  • Worms and parasites
It’s so painful for us when our furry friends are in pain, and it can be so frustrating when it seems like there’s nothing we can do. One of the most rewarding parts of working with noni is seeing the results it brings to people’s beloved pets, often extending their lives with happy, healthy years.
